Coaching
What is coaching?
Coaching is a relationship between the client and the coach in a particular subject with the object of vastly improving the client’s proficiency in the subject. The arrangement is normally for a set period of time, usually 6 months.
Why use a coach?
The simple answer is: maybe you shouldn’t. That can only be determined by a conversation between the two parties where the client's objectives are laid out and the coach discusses how he can - or perhaps can't - be of assistance. For a coaching relationship to work out, it has to be a good fit where both client and coach agree on the objectives as well as a plan of action designed to ensure the client achieves these objectives. And when the fit is right, we usually achieve excellent results together.
What's the difference between a coaching relationship and the seminar?
There are two major differences: time and personal attention. A seminar is by definition a short-term learning experience, normally no more than two days, and can be very effective in providing the maximum amount of information to an attendee in a short period of time. A coaching relationship is much longer term in scope. A coaching relationship also is a one-on-one situation where the coach and client work on a regular basis to improve proficiency. In my mind, the ideal situation is a combination of the seminar followed by a coaching relationship.
How do we proceed?
TAG for Productivity always begins this process with a face-to-face meeting between client and coach. Objectives are discussed, the coach presents his credentials as well as a suggested plan of action, and the two parties determine if they have a good fit. We always emphasize that this is a partnership arrangement. TAG coaches are subject matter experts with a long history of helping people reach their objectives. However, much work will be required from the client. Think for a minute about a golf coach: he can look at your swing, help you with your mechanics, and show you a plan of action to significantly lower your handicap. However, the golfer must do the “heavy lifting”. He commits to go to the driving range several times a week and has to commit to play a couple rounds of golf each week. In other words, he has to take the instruction given by the coach and make it a part of his very being. It is exactly the same thing in the coaching that we provide.
